Scuderia Car Parts has been fitting exhaust products to supercars for 14 years now and this week we had a very special Porsche 991 GT3 RS in to be fitted with a lightweight Cargraphic Exhaust. The car is already a stunning piece of machinery (as well as being incredibly fun to drive), but with the Cargraphic system, it now sounds as good as it looks – keep reading to see the video of what we mean!
Why fit an aftermarket exhaust to a 991 GT3 RS?
In spite of Porsche making efforts to optimise the original exhaust for the 991 GT3 RS (primarily by manufacturing the rear silencer portion in titanium), there is still a substantial improvement in weight, performance and SOUND to be enjoyed by replacing the original unit.
The OE system is complex; exhaust gasses come out of the manifolds into restrictive 800 cell cats. They then enter the two heavy side mufflers and exit through the rear silencer. When the Porsche sports exhaust button is activated, exhaust gasses bypass the side mufflers and exit through the rear silencer alone, giving a lift in volume.
How does the Cargraphic improve on this?
The Cargraphic exhaust replaces the entirety of this assembly with:
– High flow manifolds with integrated valved 200 Cell Race catalysts which are engine-management friendly.
– Lightweight Side Mufflers and a Muffler bypass to delete the rear section altogether
– All connected by high volume link pipes and sprung brackets to aid durability.
The manifolds, 200 cell race cats, silencers and rear bypass all offer very substantial reduction to backpressure, genuinely improving throttle response and outright performance, especially at high revs – allowing the car to gain as much as 21bhp.
The components are all lightweight and even the deletion of the OE titanium rear silencer with bypass helps add up to a total of 11.5kg weight reduction from stock. It is also important to note where this alternative exhaust minimises it’s a weight – in a very important part of the car, namely behind the rear axle.
But why Cargraphic?
What really sells this exhaust is the quite fabulous sound. In this system, the valves are connected to the OE Porsche Exhaust button functionality in the cockpit, so that when the owner selects ‘On’ to re-route the exhaust gasses straight into the rear bypass section and past the side silencers, the system is effectively open, delivering a quite sensational 911 Cup-car-style sound.
It’s a high-pitched howling scream of a sound – visceral, dramatic and a wonderful transformation of the driving experience which can be heard and felt from the driver’s seat. It will utterly thrill keen drivers and can always be switched off when required too. Turn your volume up and watch what we mean here!
Although the tailpipes on this specific model are still the stock components (so there’s no aesthetic benefit at the rear of the car), Cargraphic also offer tailpipes that are both lightweight and come in a range of finishes, as seen HERE.
Different track-day friendly options and variations are also possible and finally, we want to make a special mention to the fact that this is a plug-and-play upgrade that DOES NOT require any ECU reprogramming, and so DOES NOT trigger any check engine warning lights, unlike ALL other current offerings from different exhaust manufacturers.
