One particular production advancement that’s changed the Prancing Horse’s performance over the years, is their use of carbon fibre. From exterior to interior parts, a carbon fibre Ferrari changes the rules for performance in terms of handling and speed, as well as appearance.

We’re here to explore the material’s strengths, its use in some of our favourite Ferraris, and the history of Maranello picking it for Ferrari models. We also take a closer look at how it has changed Ferrari’s engineering and pricing.

History of Carbon Fibre Use

Not too long ago, carbon fibre was a material associated with industries using cutting edge technology. We’re talking aerospace, where only the best will do. While they might have been the pioneers, it wasn’t long before the material made waves in Formula 1. From there, Ferrari became the trailblazer who grabbed the track technology and put it on the road.

It began with the 1984 GTO, which made use of the material in a composite bulkhead and bonnet. Composite materials were back a few years later, in 1987, in the F40. Its body was made up of carbon fibre and Kevlar. However, it was this model that brought carbon into the interior, too. The interior panels had exposed carbon fibre, making the material an integral part of the design.

The Ferrari F50 arrived in 1995, and it was a pioneer of the carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. It was the F40s successor, but memorable and much-loved in its own right.

With each success, Ferrari kept pushing what was possible. The Enzo has an aluminium and carbon honeycomb chassis, but more strikingly, it also has carbon-fibre reinforced disc brakes. Not long after, they became standard across the range, cementing the use of the material in Ferraris.

Benefits of Using Carbon Fibre

The name of the material, carbon fibre, tells you exactly what’s involved. Engineers create it by twisting together carbon filaments to form a polymer. By weaving the fibres together, they can shape the material like cloth, coat it with other substances, or mould it to hold a permanent shape. All of these possibilities give Ferrari builders some flexibility when it comes to its usage.

Apart from its versatility, carbon fibre has two other distinct advantages. It has the highest stiffness and strength per density of any other material, which includes the metals traditionally used in car production. Its strength makes it more durable in track and road cars, reducing the wear and tear that comes from high-performance driving.

What enables that high performance, besides Ferrari’s excellent engineering, is how light carbon fibre is. Less weight means a potential increase in acceleration and higher top speeds, two things that supercar lovers often crave.

The 812 Competizione is the perfect example of how Ferrari uses carbon fibre for design and performance. The central blade gives the car its unique look while also disguising the air vents, allowing it to have a larger surface area to improve the car’s aerodynamics.

Price Impact on Ferraris

When you get all the benefits of a carbon fibre Ferrari, it comes at a price. That’s not just because better is more expensive, although sometimes that’s the case. From the

SF90 Stradale to LaFerrari, the price tags on these models made with carbon fibre aren’t small. The main reasons for that are the costs of the raw materials and production.

Compared to other materials, carbon fibre is undoubtedly more expensive. There are three aspects affecting this cost. The precursor to carbon fibre needs high-grade raw materials, and since its uses depend on its quality and strength, production is heavily controlled. Production processes require specialised equipment, expertise and energy-intensive processes, which also adds to the costs. Finally, since it’s relatively new, research to cut costs is still ongoing.

Ferrari Engineering

Ferrari is synonymous with innovation that includes speed and safety. Both Maranello and Scuderia have produced cars that pushed the limits, including many front-engine Ferraris that stick in our minds.

While it might have affected the LaFerrari price tag, it’s also brought Formula 1 use of carbon fibre to the road. It used hand-laminated materials of six different types in its construction, and they were made in the same production area as the F1 car. Engineers kept finding new uses for carbon fibre, and the 488 Pista comes with the option to have all-carbon wheels.

Safety

Strength and appearance are two key advantages of a carbon fibre Ferrari, but that strength comes with added benefits. Thanks to its properties as a lightweight and rigid material, it can make cars safer. It makes cars that are more stable and, compared to metals, there aren’t the same issues around corrosion.

Carbon fibre is also considered a safer choice because of its ability to absorb harder hits. It’s able to distribute force across the length of the material. If it’s dealt a massive blow, when part of a well-designed chassis, it can send the force away from the driver.

Speed

When manufacturers build a Ferrari out of carbon fibre, it weighs less than if the vehicle were produced with other materials, such as steel. Thanks to its rigidity, it also helps to produce more aerodynamic vehicles. The lower weight allows for improved agility and handling. A carbon-fibre Ferrari will feel much more responsive, as it can change direction quickly and navigate more precisely.

As for acceleration, there’s less weight to propel. It means your Ferrari will reach higher speeds in less time. It also increases the potential top speeds of these supercars. These factors combine to create a noticeable difference in the overall performance.

Better, Faster, Stronger

Carbon fibre has transformed the automotive industry, and Ferrari has been leading the way from the start.
